UH Short Courses
The University of Hertfordshire, in association with Exemplas, has developed a unique suite of short courses designed to develop the skills that you need to thrive in today's highly competitive world.
The courses will be delivered by the university's Business School, which has a strong reputation built up over 25 years of delivering highly innovative courses.
Introduction to Marketing
Dates: 17th May 2008, 21st June 2008, 28th June 2008, 5th July 2008 and 19th July 2008.
This course is specially designed for those entering the world of business. Marketing is a core business function and all those who embrace the challenges of business can benefit by undertaking this exciting course.
The course will cover the following topics:
- The Marketing Concept
- Understanding the challenges of the wider business environment
- Looking into your own business and competences
- Skills for the ‘new age’ Marketer
- Contributing to the customer focused Marketing effort

Understanding Financial Statements
Dates: 17th May 2008, 21st June 2008, 28th June 2008, 5th July 2008 and 19th July 2008.
This course will provide you with the techniques and skills
to develop your understanding of financial statements.
You will be more confident reading financial reports. On
completing the course, you will be able to analyse and
interpret these statements.
The course will cover the following topics:
- Nature, role and limitations of the Balance Sheet
- Nature, role and limitations of the Income Statement and
the measurement of profit
- The difference between cash flow and profit generation
- Interpretation of financial statements using accounting ratios
and other analytical techniques

Managing Information

This course focuses on the role and function of
information in the decision and communication
processes of an organisation.
The course will cover the following topics:
- Information Systems – definition and theoretical aspects
- Concepts relating to information system
- Why and how Information Systems strategy should be
aligned with the business strategy
- The management and use of Information Systems and their
impact on organisations

Introduction to Self Development
Dates: 17th May 2008, 21st June 2008, 28th June 2008, 5th July 2008 and 19th July 2008.
This course will develop your personal skills and provide
you with strategies for building confidence and dealing
with office politics.
The course will cover the following topics:
- Gaining emotional intelligence
- Motivating yourself and others
- Becoming resilient/Working with difficult people
- Managing your time

People and Organisational Management
Dates: 17th May 2008, 21st June 2008, 28th June 2008, 5th July 2008 and 19th July 2008.
This course is designed to provide you with an insight
into the different types of organisations, their design
and classification.
The course will cover the following topics:
- People and Organisations: definitions, concepts and
key issues
- Concepts and terms relating to people-management
and organisations
- Organisations – types, classification, structure, culture
- The management of people – an evaluation of approaches
