Enterprising Communities and the Pathways to Enterprise Programme

Enterprise isn’t just about making money; it’s also about making communities.

When a group of entrepreneurial Asian women got together at their local temple to rustle up some Indian treats, they had no idea what they were starting.

What began as a small scale sweet sale has really taken off.

The ‘Pathways to Enterprise’ programme, led by Exemplas, provided some well timed advice. With the objectives of encouraging – and enabling - enterprise amongst hard to reach groups, ‘Pathways to Enterprise’ offered an effective model of engagement and a comprehensive range of provision.

It also ensured that language was no barrier.

Improving access to business support

Translating the core business start-up training into Punjabi, Exemplas provided 35 members of the Sanjaah Community Group with a whistle-stop tour of business start up and business support.

They introduced mainstream business support, brought in the local Business Link Start–Up champion - and, most importantly, provided the space and expertise needed to explore the group’s future.

It was an important turning point for the Sanjaah Community Group.

Through the ‘Pathways to Enterprise’ programme, Exemplas gave them some much needed business confidence.

After participating in Exemplas’ workshop, the Sanjaah Community group appointed a chairperson and devised a constitution of shared values and goals.

developing sustainable businesses

The business model was confirmed – and understood. Barriers to business (language skills) were identified, and addressed (basic training). Objectives (a thriving community business within 12 months) were formed; aspirations (franchising to other community based groups) developed.

It really helped the group to focus.

And it really inspired them.

Community Benefits

Following Exemplas’ delivery of the ‘Pathways to Enterprise’ programme, the Sanjaah Community Group is now determined to make an economic contribution to the local community - and they’re now equipped to turn a community group in to a profitable Social Enterprise.
