What is Direct Selling?
Direct Selling is an alternative channel of retail distribution which accounts for sales in excess of £2 billion every year and offers the public a wide range of consumer goods. It is the UK's largest provider of part time, independent earning opportunities.
This business is achieved by over 400,000 independent direct sellers. Although the majority work on a part time basis, selling the products of substantial companies, they all run their own small businesses where rewards are based on what they achieve. For the majority this is an opportunity to supplement their family incomes with a low cost small business activity that can be carried out at times and a level of commitment of their own choosing. However, for over 20,000 individuals this is a full time occupation. A significant number of whom have created their own, totally independent businesses.
- Away from permanent retail locations;
- Normally in the homes of consumers;
- In face to face contact with a direct seller;
- Through personal explanation and/or demonstration.
Direct Selling is a method of selling goods directly to the consumer and is usually made face to face, either where a product is demonstrated in the home or a catalogue is left with the customer. From gas and electricity supplies to clothes, toys and games to skin care and cosmetics, these are just some of the categories of goods that are supplied through Direct Selling companies.
What are your next steps?
These are just some of the considerations – the next step is to find out more about direct selling by attending one of the Business Start Up show or exhibitions. These are held each year throughout the UK and bring together various support organisations, the Direct Selling Association (DSA), banks, consultants and solicitors. Introductory seminars are held during the exhibitions and direct selling seminars are also run throughout the year by Exemplas.
How can we help you?
Exemplas deliver services aiming to encourage people to consider entering into self-employment through a structured business format such as franchising, licensing or a direct selling. While Exemplas' services and support are available to anyone, the partnership specialises in helping disabled people, young people and other target groups that might otherwise find it particularly daunting to enter into business.
